Vickers Wellington Mk.VIII Royal Air Force HX604/X No221 Squadron, Special Duties Flight, Malta 1941
This model may not have a limited edition certificate. The reason Malta was so critical to Allied fortunes in the Middle east was because of its strategic location. Lying midway along the Mediterranean and halfway between Italy and the North Africa, it was the perfect place from which to attack Axis shipping heading to Libya. It is no coincidence that whenever Axis attacks on the Island intensidied, Axis fortunes in North Africa improved. Working with the Royal Navy, steadily increasing numbers of RAF bombers - Wellingtons, Blenheims, Beauforts and attack aircraft like the Beaufighter - played a crucial role in attacking enemy shipping. HX604:X flew with No.221 Sqn, Special Duties Flight from late 1941 and was painted in the scheme of Extra Dark Sea Grey and Dark Slate Grey upper surfaces and Night underside specifically for this theatre operations.
